Adult Education Receives 2.2% Increase in FY 2022 Federal Budget

Colleagues,

This morning Congress released the final appropriations bill for fiscal year 2022. The good news: A 2.2% increase in the appropriation for AEFLA state grants. It's not the 5% that Senator Reed and his colleagues have been advocating, but it's still an increase. Note that the entire increase is designated for state grants, with national leadership activities level funded at the prior year amount.

The table below presents the final enacted appropriation for WIOA Title 1 and Title 2, with comparative data for the three prior years as well as the President's budget request, the appropriation passed by the House last summer, and the appropriation proposed by the Senate. Our sources tell us that these line items, like the Education appropriation overall, are lower than the earlier proposals because of the need to balance non-defense discretionary spending against recent increases to the defense budget resulting from the war in Ukraine.

In related news, for those interested in Pell grants, the maximum grant is increased by $400 but there is a $1 billion rescission of previously appropriated funding. I can provide further information on this if the level of interest warrants. Feel free to be in touch if you have questions.

Cordially,

Deborah
