Hi everyone, while we are still waiting on sure movement for appropriations and the BBB bill, below are some quick updates:
FY22 Appropriations -
The extension of government funding from December ends on February 18. Generally, the House and Senate need at least four weeks to come to agreement in order to pass a new spending bill. If leaders don't come to an agreement soon on the split between defense and non-defense spending, congress will likely need to extend funding for a short time again. The hope is that these decisions are made quickly and that allocations for adult education are close to what the House passed last summer.
Build Back Better Reconciliation Bill -
The latest speculation, based on some leaders' comments, is that they are thinking about breaking out some parts of the large BBB reconciliation bill and considering them as standalone bills. One smaller bill could still be passed through the budget reconciliation process (50 votes in Senate), or leaders may choose to present several smaller bills that need to be passed by regular procedures (60 Senate votes).
COVID Relief -
There is some chatter about another possible bill for COVID relief, but the parameters about what the Biden admin would request is unclear. Part of the discussion will be that funds from the American Rescue Plan have not been used yet.
