Hello, Michele and All,

A quick follow up to the yesterday’s discussion about how to respond to media people who ask about “adult illiteracy” and “adult illiterates”:

— As I mentioned, back in the 1980s when the PLUS Campaign (a national awareness-raising campaign that led to a number of significant spinoffs at national, state, and local levels) got underway, there was lots of media coverage of “the adult (il)literacy issue.”  Some of it was cringe-worthy (overly-simplistic, sensationalistic, disrespectful to adult learners), though some of it was thoughtful, well-informed, and constructive.

— It looks like there might be new media coverage on the horizon, possibly triggered by the Barbara Bush Foundation’s interest in “raising awareness” and “action” related to adult literacy.  A recent report by the BBF indicates that they are now tying the literacy issue to equity and social justice and they’ve received support from the Ford Foundation (which supported the great Hunter-Harman “Adult Illiteracy in the United States” report of the late 1970s and early 1980s which called for a significant investment in community-based programs tied to social justice.)

— At the same time, NCL members are exploring  how to shape federal policy to create a national adult basic skills system that better responds to learner interests and social-economic realities.

— That said, should NCL and its member organizations be proactive in preparing some simple talking points (building on existing similar messages that NCL members have likely already developed) for adult educators to use when dealing with news media, policy makers, and other audiences who want to know about "the adult illiterates” in the US?  We can firmly, professionally, and constructively steer them away from misleading and unhelpful media coverage and in a better-informed, thoughtful, and constructive direction.
